“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
– Mark Twain
This is a great quote to keep in mind. Twain is probably one of my top three favorite quoters, due to his wit, satire, and inclination toward brevity. He doesn’t waste words.
Of course The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin is one of my favorite literary novels of all time. Twain had the ability to peer into humanity’s soul and come out with profound conclusions. He was a true national treasure, so much so that he was routinely a character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, often providing humor and inspiration for the Enterprise crew to solve whatever problems they were having.
But back to the gist of his quote. It is important to stop and think whenever you’re part of the majority, or aptly, part of the herd. Are you just being shepherded into a particular way of thinking? Are you being influenced because everyone else is doing it?
It may be that the majority is right. They sometimes are. But the key is to question it and if your conclusion comes to the same place, then so be it. You didn’t take it for granted.
