Firstly, the PricewaterhouseCooper accountant in charge of the cards was distracted while tweeting photos back stage and handed Warren Beatty the wrong card. On top of that poor typography choice did not help. This piece from Benjamin Bannister on Medium makes a good case that better typography could have deterred Faye Dunaway from reading the card when Beatty showed it to her.
Being in the print publishing business, typography is as important to me as the actual content. It’s unthinkable that the Academy, or any respectable organization, did not pay more attention to design. I would wager that we’ll see a new card design at the Oscars next year.
