Scott Land: The man who pulls the strings

Scott Land

I had a great breakfast with Scott and Lisa Land at Cindy’s in Eagle Rock this morning. What great people. We talked puppets, of course, but also life musings, philosophy, politics and entertainment. Scott Land is perhaps the greatest living puppeteer and marionette artist, whose work could be seen in Team America: World Police, The Princess Diaries 2, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, The Ben Stiller Show, among others. Scott also regularly performs at The Magic Castle (where I recently saw him), Disneyland, Las Vegas, and at various venues worldwide. He also does private shows and has performed for Dick Van Dyke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Copperfield, Sylvester Stallone, Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and most impressively, his holiness the Dalai Lama, to name a few. The interview lasted just under two hours and has lots of juicy outtakes.

I’m thinking about doing at least one book, probably two, on Scott and puppeteering, which Scott says is most certainly a dying art. Scott’s intention is to document a history of puppeteering as well as a how-to manual. Unlike many of his predecessors, mentors even, Scott wants to not just reveal but teach everything there is to know about creating and performing puppetry. His passion for and desire to preserve this centuries-old art form is truly inspiring and admirable.
