Anyone who knows Daniel Roebuck knows how personable and friendly and genuine he is. Those of us who can call him a friend also know that he is extremely passionate when it comes to classic monsters and horror films. In fact, over most of his life Dan has amassed an unparallelled collection of monster related collectibles and memorabilia. He even had a private museum of his own, inspired by Forry Ackerman and Bob Burns. It was called Dr. Shocker’s House of Horror! Dr. Shocker, of course, is Daniel’s ever irritable alter ego.
This illustrious collection of Daniel’s has been much talked about among classic monster fans–at least among those who had the privilege to have been invited to the private museum. This collection comprises dozens of posters, lobby cards, autographs, original artwork, animation cels, comics, wax figures, vintage dolls, props, life masks, model kits and many of the classic toys once offered in the pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Some of the greatest horror actors are represented: Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney, Price, to name the usual suspects. Massive compilations of Frankenstein’s Monster, Wolfman, Dracula, and the Creature are featured, in addition to campy and tongue-in-cheek franchises such as The Munsters, Addams Family, Abbott & Costello, etc. The diversity of the collection also includes Planet of the Apes, King Kong, Captain Company, Universal Studios Tour, rare Japanese toys, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Mad Magazine, Don Post Studios, Army of Darkness, and much, much more.
At the peak of its glorious existence, Dr. Shocker’s House of Horror was a sight to behold. Alas, all great things come to an end, so the cliché goes. Now the honor has been bestowed upon me and the Blacksparrow Auctions team to commemorate the collection with a curated live auction to be held at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood on October 26, 2013. A print catalog will be produced to celebrate one of the the greatest classic monster collections there ever was. Fans and collectors will be treated to a once in a lifetime collectible event and be able to relive the pop culture explosion of classic monster and horror memorabilia of the late 20th century. If that’s not enough, rumor has it that Dr. Shocker himself will make an appearance at this special event! For more information on the live auction event, please visit Blacksparrow Auctions.
That’s not all. Blacksparrow Auctions will be hosting the world premier of Daniel’s latest Dr. Shocker project, “Dr. Shocker’s Vault of Horror” documentary, on October 9th at the same TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. The highly anticipated “shock-u-mentary” will be released on DVD (currently available for pre-order), which includes MONSTERMANIACS, a documentary about the monster collecting craze featuring Daniel’s historic collection as its centerpiece. Seating is limited for the one night only big screen premiere. RSVP at firstname.lastname@example.org.
