There has been a slow buildup of excitement within the running community the last few years. Like the time when athletic science tested the boundaries of human endurance to run a 4-minute mile, the race for a sub-2 hour marathon is on. Both Nike and Adidas have joined the efforts to see this come to light. Nike took the first shot earlier this month. Dubbed the Breaking2 project, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya–wearing Nike’s state-of-the-art Vaporfly shoes–came agonizingly short. His time: 2 hours and 25 seconds.
Kipchoge needed to shave just 1 second off per mile and he would have done it. Still, the attempt was admirable and it showed a sub-2 is definitely possible.
Adidas: it’s your turn.
