SpaceX announced today that it will be sending two private citizens around the moon and beyond in late 2018. The surprise announcement did not divulge who the people are or how much they are paying, only stating that they each “have already paid a significant deposit to do a moon mission.” This would be the first time in 45 years that humans have ventured into deep space. If the mission is successful–no reason to think it wouldn’t be–more private citizens would undoubtedly get in line. This would potentially be a lucrative business for SpaceX. In fact, according to the statement, “Other flight teams have also expressed strong interest and we expect more to follow.” SpaceX would be beating Virgin Galactic to the commercial space tourism industry.
