Philip Anschutz is worth almost $13 billion. He owns railroad companies, petroleum companies, and media companies. He has stakes in entertainment (Regal theaters), sports (the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings) and newspapers (San Francisco Examiner, The Weekly Standard). He has land, energy and financial holdings. He exerts influence, respect and power.
Philip Anschutz is also a very devout Christian and an outspoken climate change denier. He has made campaign contributions to conservation candidates and has funded anti-climate change research.
That last part is particularly interesting given the fact that Philip Anschutz owns the Power Company of Wyoming LLC. The PCW, in turn, owns a 320,000-acre working ranch south of Rawlins/Sinclair and northwest of Saratoga. This large patch of land is blessed with high-altitude prairies and broad ridges that give it tremendous wind resources.
With this potential in mind, Philip Anchutz has been developing one of the largest wind farm in the world for the past 10 years. The potential energy output is 3,000 megawatts of electricity, able to power over 1 million homes.
That’s the irony: one of the most ardent climate change opponent is running one of the largest clean energy project in the world. The reason, of course, is no mystery. Anschutz is a businessman, through and through, putting principles aside when money tips the scales.
